Exacerbated Inhumane!
This unfaltering lockdown has already pulled down the economy of our country. Now, even humanity is also deteriorating along with it. It’s very disheartening to know that both the father and son were killed by two police officers in their custody in Tamilnadu. Just for the reason, they have violated the rule by not closing their outlet’s post reported time. Say, fifteen-twenty minutes. So, is it just violating the rule? Do police have that much power to kill people for crossing the limitations? NO.
It was the police’s job to ensure the implementation of lockdown. No way, it means to kill people if they failed to do so. This event is exemplary barbaric behavior by the two police officers in Tamilnadu. This is not the first time happening in India.
According to the National Crime Record Bureau data, every year at least 40 people are being the victim of custodial death. In 2017, a hundred people were the victim of custodial death which marks the highest number in a year. All those perpetrators for the custodial death are still not being accountable.
Like any other country, India has also taken a highly ineffective method of investigating the suspect by torturing them to confess the truth. This can also be used to settle any personal scores between the police officer and the suspect. This shows the wrong abuse of police power. There were so many video clips floating in social media showing that few police officers are upsetting the applecart because people violated the lockdown regulations by 30 minutes or a little more. While many police officers are giving their life to make sure the lockdown is being enforced properly, there are some mentally unstable police officers, utilizing the police excesses, and wrong abuse of police power which downgrades the entire police name of our country.
What causes the police excesses?
1. Accountability — There’s no commission or Committee to check on police forces.
2. Political Deflections — Few police officers have close nexus with the politicians.
Possible Solutions:
1. Supreme court has already implemented the policy reforms where it will police the police. But, it has not implemented in all states and districts. There’s no point in setting up a Committee or a commission that includes police officers to police the perpetrators who belong to the same. Judicial has to interfere to avoid any conflicts of interest. So, the committee or commission can regulate and penalize the perpetrators who are the cause for custodial death, if the judiciary is interfered.
2. This lockdown has taken a toll on most of the people. When it comes to police, they are going through a lot because of 10 plus working hours even during uncertain times. Post-Lockdown, there can be a training program among police officers about Human values.
3. CCTV cameras can be installed at least in the interrogation room which can be monitored by the senior officials.
I thought of not writing about this. But, I couldn't resist. This is completely my understanding of the current situation. Correct me, if I am wrong.
